When a child comes down with a cold and cough parents consider the options they have to make their child comfortable. Not every parent wants to give their child medication which may or may not be an option depending on the age of the child. If the child is four years old or younger the parents will find all cough and cold medications have been removed from the market. This leaves a parent wondering what they can do to make their child a little more comfortable. Here are some ideas to treat a child’s cold without the help of medication. Nose congestion Perhaps one of the most aggravating symptoms that come with a cold is a stuffy nose. Treating this symptom is easily done by using a saline spray solution which is very safe. Saline is just a combination of salt and water but does wonders for clearing out a stuffy nose. If the child is too young to blow their nose after the treatment, a bulb syringe may be used. A saline solution is a great alternative especially for infants. Administering saline to infants should be done by placing a few drops of the solution in the nostrils and use the bulb syringe to clean out the secretions in the nose. There is one word of caution when using the syringe bulb on an infant. If it is used in excess it can cause the nostril to get sore and sometimes light bleeding may occur. Used properly it can relieve a stuffy nose for kids of any age quite effectively. Humidify the air Humidifiers help to moisten the air and are wonderful to use in a child’s room. Cool mist humidifiers are recommended for a child’s room for just the safety factor of the child not being able to burn themselves on these types of humidifiers. Using a humidifier in a child’s room can put much needed moisture in the room and help them breathe and help any cough the child may have. There are mentholated drops on the market to place in humidifiers. This will usually help a cough as well. A word of caution about humidifiers is they need to be cleaned on a regular daily basis. They can get build-ups of bacteria and mildew. Another option to help a stuffy nose and congestion is to take the child to the bathroom and turn on the hot water in the shower. Take a book or toy with you and spend a little time and enjoying the moisture that comes from the water. This will help stuffy nose or congestion. Rest is important Rest for children is not as difficult as it is for adults. This is due to the child listening to his body while adults tend to push Category:Home › Other • Pomegranates: A newly discovered superfood • Where did the joke why did the chicken cross the road come from and why is it funny? • Can mothers diagnosed with bipolar disorder make good parents? • Spiritual evolution of human consciousness • Tips for getting a college basketball scholarship • Living with Pseudotumor cerebri (PTC) • Caring for the caregiver • Technologys impact on society
